So we get some background on the mysterious Dazai. He was an executive of the mafia and was a pretty scary guy despite not looking like one with his suicidal tendencies and all. Even the boss was afraid of him and thought that in four to five years Dazai would have killed him and would be sitting in the boss chair. What the hell is Dazai?

Oda was a lower ranked mafia guy who doesn't want to kill anyone no matter what. And he is used by all as an errand boy. Ango was an intelligence official and knew everything you need to know about the mafia. And he goes missing and Oda is sent to find him. A group called Mimic is involved in this disappearance and they're to be feared because their men are trained combatants.

Interesting stuff in this episode. We're learning more about the life Dazai had before joining his present organization of good guys. Really curious to see just how dangerous Dazai is.

Sorry, I got really excited. Anyway, I'm so glad to see BSD return, the first season was so good in my opinion and it was so nice to see Dazai's past and I can't wait for the ending and opening to be animated!

What a brilliant start for the season. Dazai's Port Mafia years were always shrouded in mystery so seeing a glimpse into that is brilliant. You can see a lot of "normal" Dazai but at the same time there's a clear darker, almost psychotic tone to his behavior. His "cheerful fool" facade is something he uses very efficiently to put his opponents at disadvantage and manipulate them by pretending to be less of a threat than he is. Its also very akin to the Ougai Mori's behavior we see in this episode too, so no wonder Mori expects Dazai to eventually kill him and succeed him - they are cut from the same cloth.

We also are introduced to Dazai's friends Ango and Oda.

Sakaguchi Ango in real life was an author who presented back then conflicting and controversial stance on the idea of "Japanese Pride". While he used to hop from genre to genre having quite an eclectic writing resume, his key works always focused on the cultural and social issues within Japan. His key work, Darakuron, literally paints the defeated post-war Japan as healthier and more truthful than the pre-war Japan blinded by nationalism and pride.
While the ongoing atmosphere in Japan was that Japan was "wronged", Sakguchi was one of the first writers to be truly disillusioned with the cultural conservatism that led them to the situation they were in. Japan did not want to hear they were wrong, they did not want to acknowledge that they comitted crimes or did horrifying things, but Ango still wrote about it as if it was not a taboo - the tone of his works almost made fun out of the stagnant traditions and nationalism that pre-war Japan was so embroiled in.
Sakaguchi said:
"Instead of traditions and beauty, we need more convenience in our lives. Destroying temples in Kyoto would not bother us at all(as a nation), but the moment the street cars stopped running, we'd be in trouble. I don't care for Horyuji or Byoduin even if they were burned to the ground. If need arose, we might as well do that and build a parking lot there."

Just like most of the authors the characters in Bungou Stray Dogs are based upon, Ango's life was a tragic one as he lost his father due to cancer and inherited a giant debt. Due to the nature of his writing, he most likely spent his years with his life being in constant danger(alas despite censorship and conservative anger, a big portion of post-war Japanese public was enamored with idea of breaking away from the past and embraced that aspect of his works despite the "taboo" context of it). And while he did manage to create a life and a family for himself, he died from a brain aneurysm.

Likewise Oda Sakunosuke also was another author who did not fit the "traditional writing style" of the times. Interestingly Oda WAS a real life friend of Dazai Osamu. In fact, the toast to the stray dogs is especially fittting as modern critics group Oda, Sakaguchi, Ishikawa and Dazai as the "Japanese Decadents" - self-destructive disillusioned outcasts within the writing circles and within Japanese literature. Dazai, Oda and Sakaguchi were the stray dogs of literature(Bungou) of their times. When Oda died from punctured lung, Dazai was disheartened , to the point that his death led to Dazai writing a heated and emotional eulogy which condemned the literature's "traditions" that caused a lot of Oda's works to be banned or shunned.
Oda's characters, just like Oda in the show, were frank, stubborn individuals driven by the conflict between their beliefs and the basic need of survival. His works explored the lives and customs and sometimes futility of the "common folk" of Japan, depicting the cruel and dark life of postWW2 Japan.

The show continues to surprise how well it ties together history of literature and how much the author seems to know about those various writers and overall literature. I really feel that those who have no interest in literature are missing ALOT.

Intense episode, just missed this suicide maniac Dazai. Well on the dark past of him, he looks so badass. I like the calm background music playing at the bar, as for the ED it qas pretty good. Looking forward for the next episode.

Not gonna lie, I loved this episode exploring Dazai's past. It's a pretty interesting way to start the season. I'm assuming this is to reveal the reasons why he left the Port Mafia, and probably to segway into the main story by introducing the other "friend" of his (who I assume will be central to the overarching plot this season).

All in all, not a bad start at all.
Looking forward to next episode already.

Great way to start this cour. Learning more about Dazai is nice, and we get to see what he was like before he left the Mafia. This episode was darker than most of previous season, but it's certainly not a bad thing.

Also, if anyone's interested, we're getting a Dazai scale figure in the future.

That was certainly a wonderful start to the season - I'm especially pleased with the focus on Dazai and the darker atmosphere compared to before *^*
It's nice that they decided to include the 'Buraiha', though I'm still really sceptical over the actual accuracy of the characters in regards to the authors that they're based upon (though, there do seem to be quite a few subtle similarities between BSD Dazai and the actual Dazai, which is nice).

I would like more Chuuya in my life, though

Interesting, second season starts with Dazai's past. One thing that had already interested me in the first season. Why he left the portmafia and how?

At all, I find that in Animes it is a good solution for the story-building, to pick up things from the past and to integrate them into the current situation (so it always creates surprising situations or it is good for the character development)

Some other shows should take an example.

I had a feeling that the anime was going to cover the 2nd light novel at some point, which I don't have an issue with since the anime will cover the entire mafia arc (which is like 20 or a bit more than 20 chapters) regardless.

Dazai is always so amusing to watch

I'm glad to see Dazai's past but some of this logic was like funky to me. Like the dude surviving all those gunshots. And Dazai's eye was like bleeding near the end, did he get shot there? If he did like how the hell did the bandage not break.

Well, like everyone else, I definitely wasn't expecting to see Dazai's past. It was enjoyable, but I was really hyped for the arc they left off on in the previous season, so I'm a little disappointed. Oh well, Bones probably knows what they're doing, so I'll just trust that it'll turn out fine.

Dude was barely standing and barely holding a gun. Dazai accounted for in what a bad shape the dude is.

As for bleeding - his face got grazed by a bullet.

This episode was probably the best one I've seen from the series as a whole thus far- it's always good to see Dazai take center stage & I'm really happy that we got a little of his past.

Only thing I'm annoyed about is that we got the opening song at the end without a sequence...now I'll hafta wait for a whole week ;_;

It seems that WOWOW (one of the channels BSD is going to be on) aired episode 13 on the 5th (like the rest of the channels) and episode 14 on the 7th, and it will continue to air BSD on Fridays (earlier than the rest).

Second Season hype. And immediate backstory for Dazai, which was pretty okay in my opinion, though I wasn't expecting the entire episode to be his backstory. Mafia boss seems pretty... interesting... for someone watching a young girl getting dressed.

And the inappropriately placed humor returns as Dazai plays video games while talking about three dudes that just died. Seems like this season will be less comedy and more story. Look forward to whats in store.

Having seen the first season back when it aired
i was overjoyed to see that they will be making a new season.

Lol Dazai was still that wacky back in the day eh
that was a hell of a reason for getting his injuries

Love how they are looking back at Dazai's past though
Odasaku's jobs look to be more interesting lol

The port mafia boss looks as comical as ever
But im glad to see that my third fav seiyuu Sora Amamiya's character Elise
is getting more screen time.

So the boss would rather not let others know that he dots on Elise eh lol

Hmm so the silver oracle is like a free pass that Oda can use to order people
around

Even as a executive of the port mafia Dazai was still as funny and entertaining
as he is now

Oda though is a interesting character and i hope we get to see him more

The premise is a bit darker than last season but since its focused on back when Dazai was still in the port Mafia i suppose its to be expected.

This OP is soo good for dazai and Oda . Nailed it with all the darkness cause Dazai's backstory isn't a happy one at all, and everyone can see that. I think the visuals might only change in the guild arc, but who knows they may still go with a totally new OP .

I still haven't watched the episode in full detail, but let me clarify some things first:

As you may know, episode 6 and 7 from S1 were an adaptation for the 1st Light Novel of Bungou Stray Dogs, called "Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam". I'll just say that they butchered the whole adaptation, since, to begin with, it actually happens 2 years before the main plot.

They didn't "butcher it", they just chose to take a different route with where it fit within the continuity, and I think it worked better since Kunikida and Dazai already had that chemistry together. People and their silly "if it isn't exactly following the source material, it's butchering" nonsense. If an adaptation plays with the source material and changes things while still retaining the same spirit of the source material and still telling a good story, then it's irrelevant.

Anyhow, this was a fairly strong start. I do think some of the mystery explanations were kind of farfetched and out there, though in general anime seems to have a problem with mysteries. I really did like in particular the final scene, with the blood dripping from Dazai's face, as it actually made the mystery explanation for that kind of work. The point was that he was coming up with some convoluted explanation as a means of hiding his true desire for death. Before that point in time, at the very least, during the flashback, he's talked about suicide and his desire for death, but never outright shown putting himself in such great danger in front of his comrades (keep in mind how he seems to make it clear in the first season he's more fascinated with the idea of suicide, but not so much at the idea of getting killed). So it's really interesting to see. There were a couple of questionable scenes involving that little girl, but thankfully the series doesn't dwell on it for too long.

I adored the shot composition in this episode, as they really go to show Takuya Igarashi's talents. One shot in particular looked blatantly in the vein of Utena. The show's use of color during the Flawless scene was absolutely on point, and the darker tone the series gave off this episode really goes show how much different Dazai's past life was in comparison to how it is now that he's left.

While it did fall into some trappings that I was hoping it'd avoid (overly long, convoluted mystery explanations, some occasionally jarring humor), the series is definitely off to a strong start, and I hope the quality of the second season only gets better from here. Especially with how much the first season kept improving as it went on.
